Employment

B.15 Modelmaking Workshop Technician,

University of Manchester, Manchester School of Architecture (MSA), March 2013 – Present

In this role I provide theoretical and technical advice on modelmaking to students of architecture. I continue to advance my own understanding of the application of modelmaking within the field of architecture through research and use this experience to best inform students at all levels of architectural study.

During my time here I have compiled a historical archive of past student projects, established a student workshop blog resource, curated the 'B.15:45' and 'B.15:ARCHITYPES' exhibitions of architectural models from the school, established an annual award to recognise modelmaking skills, strengthened links to the architectural field through speaker presentations and continued collaborations in modelmaking.

I regularly publish articles and share videos at the workshop blog here: www.manchester.ac.uk/b15workshop

Freelance work

Creative Service Industries, Eccles, February 2012 – March 2013

Whilst working at CSI I have been fortunate to be involved in a wide range of modelmaking projects. These have included: Various types of Architectural models, Exhibition pieces, Exhibition construction, Promotional pieces (Adidas, London Marathon, Lego), Replica film props, Product modelling and Prototyping, Bespoke Awards (UEFA Euro 2012 Awards, British Fashion Awards).

The work at CSI is fast paced and projects vary one day to the next which presents a constant challenge to meet deadlines. My skills are being expanded on a daily basis and I enjoy the variety of projects I work on here.

'MAKE Collective ' June 2011 - Present

I started MAKE, a freelance collective group, to allow me to pursue solo projects alongside fellow graduates and makers in the Manchester area. My first project under the MAKE banner was the main presentation model for the new ITV studios at Media City UK which was featured on TV news reports and in articles nationwide.

Throughout October 2012 myself and fellow freelancer Alan Hinton worked at the Manchester Museum designing and making bespoke object mounts. This involved object handling and careful consideration to each individual item and the best way to treat it with the chosen acrylic materials. The completed exhibition consists on over a thousand bespoke mounts all of which were completed by MAKE.

Network Modelmakers, London September 2011 - November 2011

During this period I picked up skills in AutoCAD drawing. I worked on a large scale project and was actively involved in model design for a major feature. My time here involved the use of a variety of workshop machines, Laser Cutting, working with brass and spraying. I left to persue my career closer to home.

Dynamic Modelmakers Ltd, Salford, January 2012 – March 2012

I worked alongside modelmaker Jon Ille constructing a museum exhibition and several promotional models throughout January/February of 2012. Throughout February/March I worked nights at Dynamic assisting on architectural presentation models. I have since worked several small projects there and if possible will continue to do so alongside other work commitments.

Technical Models Ltd, Stockport June 2010 - August 2010

During this period I was employed to work on a wide range of projects both as part of a team. Projects included engineering Cross Section Models, Architectural Models, Exhibitions Display Models, Hands-on demonstration Models and Base, Plinth and Acrylic Case Making. I used workshop machinery on a regular basis and was given high responsibility jobs such as final spraying and Lacquering. I left to return to study in Bournemouth.

Work Experience

•During March 2010 I worked for Millennium Models in London. This was an intense two week period helping to make various parts of a landscape architectural model. The project was fast paced and had a tight deadline which was met on time.

•I have had several weeks work experience with Jim Backhouse at the University of Manchesters School of Architecture dating back as far as 2003. This involved working on Architectural Models and with CAD packages. I have been back several times to assist with model making projects and continue to stay in regular contact with Jim.

From an early age I have always loved to make. This has continued as I have matured and has remained consistent at all levels of education culminating with my degree in modelmaking. Post-graduation continues to present new challenges and the learning never stops.

As an independent UK modelmaker I can offer insight into a wide range of making types and styles and am always keen to get involved in new and interesting design projects.

Models can bring crucial insight into design on many levels. With the correct approach they can help to clearly identify design successes and failures in your project.

I am enthusiastic and open to learning as many new skills as possible that I can then apply to real projects in a commercial environment. During my degree course I obtained a foundation in a wide range of workshop skills. These skills have been strengthened with work experience and a sound understanding of the creative industry.

If you have any questions regarding modelmaking or Job requests don't hesitate to get in touch!
